One of my favorite sites, kottke.org is all redesigned and whatnot.
My quick take on the site is that I kinda dig the aqua blue border, as well as the overall color scheme. In an effort that will surely boost the site’s SEO performance, tags are more readily seen througout the homepage — after each post and in the right rail, there’s a tag-fest featuring “Recently popular tags,” “All-time popular tags” and “Random tags.”
Speaking of the right rail, it looks like the BuzzFeed links have gotten the boot. I know Jason Kottke’s one of BuzzFeed’s advisors, so I wonder why he got rid of them.
I don’t recall kottke.org having single article pages for every single post on his homepage, but it looks like the new design gives each post its own article page. I’m not sure why each post needs a byline, though, since Jason is the only one that posts to the site. Again, I’m sure all of these additions will help the site in the SEO department.
I appreciate that the fonts are larger, since I always found the old site design a bit difficult to scan. Conversely, I do think that as a result of the bigger font sizes, the new design seems a bit more generic than before, since there was always something encylopedic about the site’s previous design, which seemed more befitting of a site like kottke.org.
I’m sort of shooting off-the-cuff here, but I’m sure that I will appreciate more and more things about the redesign as time goes on. Either way, change is always a good thing, in my book.
Nicely done, Mr. Kottke!
