favicon-post

Today, I decided to design a favicon for this here site. (It’s that little icon you see just to the left of a website’s URL in your browser.)

After planning to spend about 10 minutes on the idea I had in my head, the design process being what it always is, I ended up spending about an hour on it. Here’s the creative process that I went through…

Version 1:

With this design, I was thinking “half.” It reminded me a bit too much of Van Halen’s “Diver Down” album cover, though. (Not a bad thing, just not what I wanted to convey.)

Version 2:

favicon3

With this one, I had the idea of taking an “H” and splitting it down the middle, which I thought created an interesting semi-ambiguous shape.

Version 3:

favicon4

In an attempt to build upon Version 2, I played around and came up with this. I tried to create an “A” shape from the “H.” (Operative word being “tried.”)

Version 4:

I sort of thought that with versions 2 and 3, things were getting a bit overly conceptual. With this version, I decided to make the “H” look like an “H.” There was something about those dots in version 3 that I liked, so I simplified it to one dot (which does have a meaning in my noggin, but since I can’t give all my trade secrets away, I’ll leave that to your own translation). This version is the one I decided to go with.

Done! (For now.)
