The Masterpieces of the Prado Museum, via Google Earth 01/25/2009 – 1:23 am

El Greco

The people at Google Earth have been up to something quite excellent–namely, hanging out at the Prado Museum in Madrid. There, they’ve been capturing masterpieces by the likes of Velazquez, Goya and my all-time favorite, El Greco (above), as well as other artists using their ultra high resolution technology. According to Google Earth, “The images of these works are about 14,000 million pixels, 1,400 times more detailled than the image a 10 megapixel digital camera would take.” You can choose a painting and zoom into it with such stunning clarity that it gave me one of those Neo “Whoa.” moments. Breathtaking stuff!

(The paintings can also be viewed via Google maps.)

Here’s a clip of the Google Earth team’s process for the project:

Thanks to Time.com, for the heads-up.
